On-board Fare

Since 1 February 2015 there is an "On-board Fare". This applies to all passengers, occasional travellers as well as railcard holders.

A surcharge of € 7 automatically applies for tickets purchased on board the train, as opposed to tickets purchased through one of the many alternative SNCB sales outlets. This surcharge cannot be cancelled by the train conductor.

Why an On-board Fare?

With the On-board Fare the rules of buying a ticket on board the train are simple. These used to be quite complicated and subject to interpretation, which sometimes led to disputes and difficult, or contradictory situations.

What will change for occasional travellers?

  • If you are travelling with a valid ticket:
    Of course, nothing changes.
  • If you are travelling without a valid ticket:
    • You buy a ticket at the On-board Fare (normal ticket price + € 7) and you can continue your journey as planned.
    • If you fail to buy a ticket at the On-board Fare for whichever reason, the train conductor will be required to issue a Penalty Fare Notice (€ 75). You are entitled to contact Customer Services if you can justify travelling without a valid train ticket or being unable to buy a ticket at the On-board Fare.

What will change for railcard holders?

  • If you are travelling with a valid railcard:
Of course, nothing changes for you.
  • If you are travelling with an expired railcard:
Just like travellers without a valid ticket, you will have to buy a ticket at the On-board Fare (normal ticket price + € 7).
  • You have forgotten your railcard:
    • Buy a ticket at the On-board Fare (normal ticket price + € 7) and take your on-board ticket as well as your railcard which was valid on the day of the facts to any ticket office within 14 calendar days (including the date of the facts). You will be reimbursed for the total fare amount.
    • If you fail to buy a ticket at the On-board Fare (normal ticket price + € 7) for whichever reason, the train conductor will be required to issue a Penalty Fare Notice (€ 75). Within 14 calendar days (including the date of the facts), you will have to present your railcard which was valid on the date of the notice, as well as the penalty fare notice at the ticket office. The notice and the penalty (€ 75) will be cancelled.
