On-board Fare

  • On-board Fare
    • What is the On-board Fare?
A surcharge of € 7 automatically applies for tickets purchased on board the train, as opposed to tickets purchased through one of the many alternative SNCB sales outlets. This surcharge cannot be cancelled by the train conductor.
    • Why an On-board Fare?
The On-board Fare is being introduced to simplify ticket sales regulations on the train.  These used to be fairly complicated and subject to interpretation, which sometimes led to disputes and difficult, or contradictory situations.
    • When will it be launched?
The On-board Fare will apply as of 1st February 2015.
    • Who is this On-board Fare for?
It applies to all passengers, occasional travellers as well as railcard holders.
    • Where will the On-board Fare be applicable?

The On-board Fare applies between 2 Belgian train stations.

The ticket is issued without the "On-board Fare Supplement" when departing from Maastricht, Maastricht Randwyck, Eijsden, Roosendaal, Aachen, Lille and all Luxembourg stations.

    • Do you need a train ticket before boarding?
Normally, yes. If this is not the case, the traveller can buy a ticket on board, in which case the On-board Fare will apply.
    • Is it still necessary to inform the train conductor in case you weren't able to buy a ticket before boarding?
The requirement to inform a train conductor before boarding no longer exists.
    • What will actually change for the occasional traveller?
      • If you are travelling with a valid ticket: nothing changes.
      • If you are travelling without a valid ticket:
        • You buy a ticket at the On-board Fare (normal ticket price + € 7) and you can continue your journey as planned.
        • If you fail to buy a ticket at the On-board Fare for whichever reason, the train conductor will be required to issue a Penalty Fare Notice (€ 75). You are entitled to contact Customer Services if you can justify travelling without a valid train ticket or being unable to buy a ticket at the On-board Fare.

    • What will change for railcard holders?
      • If you are travelling with a valid railcard: nothing changes.
      • If you are travelling with an invalid railcard: similar to travellers without a valid ticket, you will have to buy a ticket at the On-board Fare (normal ticket price + € 7).
      • You have forgotten your railcard:
        • Buy a ticket at the On-board Fare (normal ticket price + € 7) and take your on-board ticket as well as your railcard which was valid on the day of the facts to any ticket office within 14 calendar days (including the date of the facts).  You will be reimbursed for the total fare amount.
        • If you fail to buy a ticket at the On-board Fare for whichever reason, the train conductor will be required to issue a Penalty Fare Notice (€ 75). Within 14 calendar days (including the date of the facts), you will have to present your railcard which was valid on the date of the notice, as well as the penalty fare notice at the ticket office.  The notice will be cancelled.
        • This regulation is not applied to the Part-time Railcard, Campus Card and Railease.

    • What if it was not possible to buy a ticket at the station or stop?

If there is no ticket office (open) and there is no ticket dispenser (or it is out of order for a prolonged period of time), the surcharge of the On-board Fare will not be applied. The train conductor's ticketing system is able to recognise these cases through regular automated synchronisations. If the surcharge was applied nevertheless (temporary problems are not recognized by the train conductor's ticketing system), you can contact Customer Services.

    • Are there any exemptions from this On-board surcharge?
The surcharge of € 7 will not be applied to:
      • Any products which are not available from the ticket dispenser
      • Any sales at stops without a ticket office or ticket dispenser
      • Any sales at stops which show up in the train conductor's ticketing system as having a ticket dispenser which is out of order
      • Situations of a general system breakdown
      • The Diabolo surcharge for Brussels Airport - Zaventem
      • Tickets departing from Maastricht, Maastricht Randwyck, Eijsden, Roosendaal, Aachen, Lille and all Luxembourg stations
